Trump on Mueller testimony: It was ‘a very good day’ for the Republican Party

President Trump told reporters that he felt Wednesday was “a very good day” for the Republican Party, following special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony in front of two House committees.

Mueller was testifying about his two-year investigation into whether or not the president or his campaign knowingly conspired with Russia to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. The investigation concluded that no one did; however, they did not determine whether or not the president obstructed justice, knowing that a long-standing Department of Justice guideline asserts that a sitting president cannot be indicted.

“I thought we had a very good day, the Republican Party. Our country, there was no defense for what Robert Mueller was trying to defend, in all fairness to Robert Mueller. Whether his performance was a bad one or a good one, I think everybody understands that,” Trump told reporters.

He continued, “I think everybody understands what’s going on. There was no defense to this ridiculous hoax, a witch hunt that’s been going on for a long time. Pretty much from the time I came down on the escalator with our first lady.”

Trump also attacked Democratic leadership for their role in pushing the investigation, which the president claimed they knew was “phony.”

Apart from the occasional retweet, the president was relatively quiet on social media during Mueller’s testimony. “I would like to thank the Democrats for holding this morning’s hearing. Now, after 3 hours, Robert Mueller has to subject himself to #ShiftySchiff – an Embarrassment to our Country!” he said at one point.
