Priebus: A ‘degree of diversity’ needed for Trump on ticket

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus argued Monday that presumptive nominee Donald Trump needs to add diversity to the ticket with his running mate choice in order to attract votes.

Priebus told radio host Hugh Hewitt Monday morning that it would be good for Trump to diversify the ticket in terms of age, ethnicity, experience or some other factor. Over the weekend, it was reported that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was on the shortlist for Trump, but Priebus seemed to argue to discount these rumors.

“I do think the vetting process is far more detailed, and I know there’s more involved in that vetting process than I think is being reported right now,” Priebus told the radio host. “I would just kind of let those VP rumors go by the wayside and assume that the Trump campaign understands that while he’s an outsider and represents, sort of, this shake-up in Washington, which you don’t want to lose, because that is what I think people want out there across the country.”

“He also understands that you’ve got to have a real seasoned veteran. And I do agree with you, there has to be a degree of diversity on the ballot,” Priebus said. “Now, whether that be diversity of age or diversity of gender or ethnic background. Somehow, diversity is important in some respects, so I agree with that. But obviously it’s not my decision, but I do think they’ll take their time and do it right.”

Over the weekend, Dr. Ben Carson told the Washington Post that Palin, along with Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Ted Cruz and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are being considered for the vice presidential slot.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has also been mentioned as a potential running mate for the real estate mogul, saying over the weekend that he is open to joining the ticket if asked.
