Late night political comedian John Oliver grimly announced his fear for abortion rights in the U.S. after Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement from the Supreme Court bench on “Last Week Tonight,” Mediaite reported.
“Now, this is obviously huge news,” Oliver said. “For anyone who believes that the Constitution protects things like reproductive and LGBT rights, this is bad. And we know it’s bad because Donald Trump Jr. was happy.”
“OMG! Just when you thought this week couldn’t get more lit… I give you Anthony Kennedy’s retirement from #SCOTUS,” said Trump Jr. after the announcement broke last week.

Oliver joined critics in mocking the president’s son using the party term “lit” to describe his excitement, saying “I’m afraid I’m going to have to disagree with Mr. Junior on this because I personally don’t think this was lit at all.”

Noting the Republicans’ majority control in the House, Democrats are “shit out of luck” to stop the nomination, Oliver said.
Oliver later brought up CNN legal analyst Jeffery Toobin’s devastation that this could mean the end for Roe v. Wade’s ruling that made abortion legal in the United States.
“Abortion will be illegal in quite a significant chunk of this country in 18 months,” Toobin said in a CNN interview.
“Roe v. Wade is doomed; it is gone because Donald Trump won the election,” Toobin said in a different CNN interview.
“I’m happy to say there is some good news here,” Oliver said. “Because, it turns out there is a Constitutional loophole that allows Democrats to … I’m obviously lying here, there is no good news, everything is terrible now.”
