The newyear?s fitness trends emphasize programming for special populations as well as alternative and low-cost fitness options.
The American Council on Exercise, based in San Diego, Calif., has issued its fitness trend predictions for 2007:
» Specialized fitness programming for older adults. Flexibility, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis concerns will continue to be addressed through specialty classes. Fall prevention programs also are making their way onto the list of offerings at bigger health clubs.
» Youth programming. Many school systems have reduced hours dedicated to recess and activity. Health reports regarding the nation?s youth are not encouraging, and the impact will provide the impetus necessary to get these children moving and leading healthier lives.
» Team approach. Trainers, doctors and physical therapists will continue to work together blending their specialties to better serve the individual and combat negative health concerns.
» Time-efficient workouts. For individuals pressed for time, workouts should run 30 to 45 minutes. Consumers will see this reflected in group fitness classes and personal training sessions.
» Mind and body connection. Incorporating integral components of mind-body activities such as posture, breathing and body awareness, enables the health club member to address total body health, not just the physical aspect.
