SPRING LAKE, N.J. (AP) — Federal officials have approved a $2.5-million federal study for Wreck Pond to address environmental issues, including drainage problems that have caused chronic flooding in Monmouth County.
The Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/1bl0KTj) reports the Army Corps of Engineers study will seek the best ways to combat hazards associated with drainage problems at the pond. It will likely take two to three years to complete.
Wreck Pond is part of a 12.8-square-mile watershed that includes Wall, Spring Lake and Sea Girt. At one point it had a natural inlet, but that has been closed. Tidal flow to the ocean is now controlled by an outfall pipe.
The study will seek ways to reduce flooding and erosion; improve water quality to negate beach closures; dredge sediment and evaluate the outfall structure.
