Washington Examiner reporter Sarah Westwood discusses ‘stunning’ lack of transparency in BLM investigation

An investigative reporter for the Washington Examiner delivered a brief rundown Friday with regard to exclusive reporting on Black Lives Matter.

Sarah Westwood, who covers politics and investigations, appeared on Fox News to discuss colleague Andrew Kerr‘s digging into BLM’s “stunning” lack of transparency surrounding its finances and operations that charity experts say raises major legal and ethical red flags.

The Washington Examiner investigation, published Thursday, noted that no one appears to have been in charge at BLM for months, the address it lists on tax forms is wrong, and the charity’s two board members won’t say who controls its $60 million bankroll.

“When Patrisse Cullors resigned last spring, she said two activists were going to be taking over for her in an acting capacity. Andrew reached out to them, and both of them said they never took the job at the BLM nonprofit and had no idea if anyone ever did. The two remaining board members, the known ones at BLM, would not say who is in charge,” Westwood told host Jesse Watters.

“The address that the BLM nonprofit listed on its tax forms as the location of its books — we sent a reporter, Tori Richards, there to check it out,” she added. “And the security guard there said there had never been, at any point, a BLM office at that location — so [there are] a lot of unanswered questions about who is in charge and where all that money is going.”

Cullors, one of the organization’s co-founders who resigned in 2021, faced backlash last year after spending millions of dollars on real estate. Cullors has denied spending any of the BLM money on the purchases, but critics still attacked her lack of transparency with regard to her finances.

“It was like a smash and grab. And they did it off the backs of people they were trying to save,” Watters said. “It’s really disgraceful.”
