Examining Politics Podcast: Maureen Dowd’s family ‘is the basket of deplorables’

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd took aim at Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton this week in an interview with the Washington Examiner.

Dowd said both the Republican and Democratic nominees leave much to be desired as future presidents, with Trump, in her view, giving voice to the racism of his most ardent supporters.

At the same time, Dowd was critical of Clinton for referring to some Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables,” saying the Democrat has unfairly tarred voters who have legitimate reasons for backing her Republican opponent.

“I joke that my family is the ‘basket of deplorables’ because my family is like this group of very conservative Irish Catholics,” Dowd said during an interview with “Examining Politics,” the Examiner’s weekly podcast.

“I think that the election of the first African-American president did bring out a lot of racism,” she said. “And when I look at YouTube, at Trump rallies and see the comments next to them about Hillary and Obama, it makes me sick to my stomach, it makes me want to sign up to volunteer for Hillary, but then I snap out of that.”
