When I was your age, tuition cost a paper clip: Va. Tech edition

Holy public school! In-state tuition at Virginia Tech is rising nearly 10 percent next school year, topping out price increases at three other commonwealth schools.

Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors voted Thursday to increase tuition and mandatory fees to $10,509 for 2011-2012, a 9.6 percent jump. Out-of-state undergrads will see a more modest 5.4 percent increase to $24,480.

Room and board will increase an unholy 9 percent, from $6,290 to $6,856. Parents, order new checks.

Like the presidents at College of William and Mary, University of Virginia, and Virginia State, Va. Tech President Charles Steger said that lagging state funding and a $21 million dropoff in federal stimulus dollars is forcing the university’s hand.

Tech will boost need-based financial aid by $1.3 million to $13.1 million, the AP reports.
