Officials euthanize black bear found near condos

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A black bear that was tranquilized after climbing a fence at an ocean-front condominium complex in Jacksonville has been euthanized.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported Tuesday that it found the bear behaving strangely in Green Cove Springs after officials had treated and released it.

Commission biologists believe the bear had a neurological issue, and determined the humane thing to do was to euthanize it.

The 300-pound bear was found on Sept. 9 after it fell asleep at the complex after climbing a 7-foot fence.

Officials at the time said they thought the bear may have been hit by a car and sent it to Camp Blanding for treatment.
