D.C Public Schools and charter schools’ enrollment increased 3.5 percent this year, the largest jump in a decade, Mayor Vincent Gray announced Tuesday.
In 2009-2010, 912 more students enrolled in DCPS, bringing total audited enrollment to 45,630. The city’s public charter schools saw almost 1,700 more students for a total 29,400.
Gray, who credited the District’s focus on early childhood education, said it was too early to say if the growth is a “trend.”
“If we stay the course with this … we’ll see not only stabilization but an increase of enrollment and it wil increase student performance due to consistent learning in early grades,” Gray said.
