Two children and their father were struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning while participating in National Walk to School Day.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department said the children were struck by the car around 9:30 a.m. on Wheeler Road SE and Mississippi Avenue SE, the Washington Post reported.

The children, ages 6 and 8, had been taking part in National Walk and Bike to School Day, which encourages children to get out and get moving.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and remained at the scene of the incident, according to the outlet.
Both children and their father were transported to the hospital, where one child reportedly suffered from severe injuries. The other child and the father suffered from non-life-threatening injuries, according to the outlet.
