D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said Tuesday that Sept. 29 will be a citywide “day of service” to fight hunger.
“Far too many children in our city and across our nation go to bed hungry each night and wake up each morning not knowing where their next meal will come from,” Gray said in a statement. “I encourage District residents to spend Sept. 29 volunteering their time with organizations fighting to make hunger history.”
Gray’s office said other jurisdictions in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia are planning similar observances. The mayor’s office did not say how Gray would mark the day.
