Pennsylvania couple charged with theft for spending over $100K after banking error

A Pennsylvania couple is liable for spending over $100,000 that a bank teller incorrectly credited to their bank account.

A BB&T bank teller punched in a wrong account code and accidentally attributed a $120,000 check to Robert and Tiffany Williams of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, on May 31. The deposit was supposed to be credited to Dimension Covington Investment LLC.

Instead of notifying the bank of the error, the Williams’ used most of it to cover a down payment on an SUV and purchase a camper, a car trailer, and a race car. The couple also loaned $15,000 to friends who needed money.

The bank caught the error by June 20 and withdrew the money from the Williams’ account while crediting it to Dimension Covington Investment. The transaction left the Williams’s bank account $107,416 in the red.

The bank notified Robert and Tiffany that they were responsible for the missing funds, and Tiffany admitted that the couple no longer had the money but would follow up to work out a repayment agreement. The bank’s repeated attempts to contact them afterward went unanswered.

The bank contacted police in early July. Officers arrested the Williams’ and charged them with theft and receiving stolen property.
