Post Office to issue George H.W. Bush stamp

The U.S. Postal Service announced the coming release of a commemorative stamp honoring former President George H.W. Bush, who died in November.

“The 41st president guided the United States through the end of the Cold War and drove the creation of a multinational coalition that successfully forced Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait in the Persian Gulf War. An advocate for public service, Bush explained his vision of a nation of volunteers as “a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky,” the USPS said in its announcement Saturday.

The stamp will be officially issued on June 12, what would have been the president’s 95th birthday, at a ceremony at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas.

The stamp will be a painted version of a 1987 photograph of Bush by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. The painting will be done by artist Michael Deas.

The USPS, while subject to congressional oversight, is run as a private sector entity and therefore receives no tax dollars. It is supported through the sale of stamps and related products.
