Stimulus update: Direct $850 relief payments must be claimed by Tuesday in Maine

There is only one day left for Maine residents to claim COVID-19 relief checks worth up to $850 due to a surplus in the state’s budget.

The checks are being sent out to residents of the Pine Tree State to help alleviate some of the financial stress caused by inflation and the COVID-19 pandemic. An estimated 858,000 Maine residents are eligible to receive this payment, according to the office of Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.

“What this budget shows once again, through hard work and good faith negotiation, Democrats, Republicans, and independents can come together to do what is right for Maine people and that we can do so without rancor or bitter partisanship that has sometimes divided Augusta in the past,” said Mills.

To qualify for this payment, applicants must have lived in the state for a full year and file their 2021 state tax returns by Oct. 31.

The checks are intended to help the lowest earners in the United States, meaning that they will only be given to those making under a certain amount. Applicants must make under $100,000 if filing single or if married and filing separately, under $150,000 if filing as head of household, and under $200,000 for couples filing jointly, with dependents ineligible for these payments.

Mills approved the check distribution in April, with the total cost of the stimulus payments expected to be about $729.3 million.
