‘Complexity and gravitas’: Jeff Daniels slated to play James Comey in 4-hour miniseries

CBS announced that Jeff Daniels will portray James Comey in a miniseries based on the former FBI director’s memoir.

Comey published the memoir, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership, last year, after President Trump fired him in 2017.

Aside from Daniels being cast as Comey, Brendan Gleeson is slated to appear as Trump and the miniseries will be directed by Billy Ray, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Production is supposed to begin next month, though a premiere date has yet to be announced. CBS has also not decided if the show will air on Showtime or CBS All Access, both of which require paid subscriptions.

Ray cited Daniels’ performance in To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway as a reason behind his casting. He stated that Daniels is the “only person who could play Jim Comey,” and added that his “instant integrity, loads of warmth, intelligence, complexity, and gravitas” made him a good choice.

Daniels appeared back in May on Deadline: White House to discuss his role as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. During the segment, host Nicolle Wallace revealed that Comey saw Daniels perform on Broadway, and that his wife wanted so badly to see the play that she sat through it with a broken clavicle.
