President Trump has reportedly asked several of his advisers about the possibility of the United States purchasing Greenland.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the president has asked advisers “with varying levels of seriousness” about whether the U.S. could purchase the autonomous Danish territory.
Some of the people to whom Trump has pitched the idea have said it would be a good economic move to acquire the world’s largest island.
Security officials have said the land is important for American security purposes, and the U.S. has been protective of keeping China from encroaching on the territory.
President Harry Truman in 1946 offered Denmark $100 million to buy Greenland, though the offer was turned down.
Greenland has been under the control of Denmark since 1814.
