Prince Harry’s legal battle over police protection in UK begins

Prince Harry wants to fund security protection for his family when they visit the United Kingdom, but his private security team does not have jurisdiction outside of the United States.

Harry’s prior requests to fund police protection personally while in the U.K. were dismissed, prompting him to file a High Court claim against the Home Office.

“Prince Harry inherited a security risk at birth, for life,” a statement released by Harry’s legal team read. “While his role within the institution has changed, his profile as a member of the Royal Family has not. Nor has the threat to him and his family.”

Harry and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, lost their U.K. taxpayer-funded police protection in 2020 after they chose to resign from their posts as senior working royals. Their legal representation argued that “others who have left public office and have an inherent threat risk receive police protection” and “he remains willing to cover the cost of security, as not to impose on the British taxpayer.”
