A special D.C. Council committee charged with investigating Mayor Vince Gray’s hiring practices is set to release a draft report detailing its findings on Aug. 24, the committee announced on Tuesday.
The report won’t likely include a series of documents from former mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown because he has yet to respond to a council subpoena and turn them over. He has, however, provided copies of phone records and money orders to the news media. The documents help back up Brown’s claim that he was offered a job and given cash stuffed envelopes by members of the Gray for Mayor campaign so Brown would stay on the campaign trail last summer.
“Due to Mr. Brown’s dilatory behavior, it is unlikely that we will receive copies of his records until the fall,” Ward 3 Councilwoman Mary Cheh wrote to other members of the committee in a memo issued on Tuesday. “In order for the Committee to reach a timely conclusion on allegations of nepotism, excessive salaries, and other matters, I believe that it is most appropriate for the Committee to issue a report on what is known now, with leave for the Committee to issue a supplemental report in the fall if new information becomes available.”
