Georgetown University has the second most expensive student housing in the nation, according to a new study by Forbes Magazine.
The school ranked second out of 450 universities that require freshmen to live on campus.
Freshmen at Georgetown pay $12,750 for room and board. The national average is $8,000, up 11 percent over the past three years, Forbes says.
Sarah Lawrence College in New York City ranked first, with a room and board price tag of $13,000.
But Sarah Lawrence residences — many of them former private mansions — are much nicer than Georgetown’s dormitories, “rooms in one of four brick high-rises that resemble the aging, cramped spaces parents may remember from their own college days,” the magazine notes.
Georgetown’s residential charges have risen 10 percent in three years.
Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., came in third at $12,220 for room and board; Smith College in Northampton, Mass., came in fourth at $12,050.
Some other Washington-area schools were above the national average for living costs. George Washington University charges $10,120 for room and board. American University’s room and board starts at $9,380. — Liz Essley
