Interim schools chief named for Maryland

Maryland parents, meet the new captain of the education ship. Well, the interim captain.

A former Queen Anne’s County superintendent has been named the chief of the Maryland Department of Education while state officials search for a permanent replacement to Nancy Grasmick, who is retiring after a 20-year tenure.

Bernard Sadusky, who led Queen Anne’s schools from 1994 to 1997,  will take the reigns July 1. Between 1997 and now, Sadusky worked for the state education department as a policy liaison to local school systems.

“Job number one must be to maintain our educational progress,” Sadusky said. “My plan is to continue the work that the State Board and Dr. Grasmick have started. Work on Maryland’s Race to the Top projects will be our focus as we further improve instruction and student achievement.”
