US service member killed in combat mission in Iraq

A U.S. service member died in Iraq while on a combat mission with Iraqi Security Forces in the northern Ninewah province on Saturday, the U.S. military reports.

The soldier was advising the Iraqi troops when he was killed, according to the Combined Joint Task Force. The mission targeted Islamic State rebels holding out in areas north of Baghdad, though Iraq declared victory over the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in 2017.

The Department of Defense has tallied 84 U.S. military casualties throughout Operation Inherent Resolve, launched in 2014 as a military operation against ISIS.

Though ISIS is considered beaten, the remaining Islamic State fighters continue to carry out missions in Iraq, launching from camps in sparse parts of the country.

The soldier’s name has been withheld until family is notified.
