Metro rescues bald eagle on Blue Line

Metro Transit Police working with the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia successfully rescued an injured American bald eagle Saturday afternoon near the Blue Lines’s Van Dorn Street Station.

The eagle, a national symbol and a protected species, was located inside the track fence about 300 yards from the station near the 5300 block of Eisenhower Avenue. Police and animal rescue personnel boarded an out-of-service Metro train to access the area, causing some delays as Blue Line trains had to single-track around them.

Officials captured the eagle, which appeared to have sustained a broken wing, and transported it to a RCV facility in Falls Church to receive care.
