Dave Chappelle rips ‘observably stupid’ Herschel Walker, Kanye West’s anti-semitism in SNL monologue

Dave Chappelle took aim at “observably stupid” Herschel Walker and made some controversial remarks of his own while addressing Kanye West’s recent anti-Semitic remarks during his Saturday Night Live opening monologue.

The superstar comedian, whose third time hosting SNL prompted boycott threats from some staff writers, made no reference to his transgender comments that prompted the writers’ backlash, instead focusing most of his monologue on the controversy surrounding West. Chappelle opened his monologue by reading a prepared statement from a piece of paper, in which he denounces anti-Semitism before saying to the camera: “And that, Kanye, is how you buy yourself some time.”

Chappelle then appeared to double down on some of the anti-Semitic tropes that West has been promoting, just minutes after denouncing anti-Semitism.

“I don’t think Kanye is crazy, he’s possibly not well. I’ve been to Hollywood, this is just what I saw. It’s a lot of Jews. Like a lot. There’s a lot of Black people in Ferguson, Missouri — doesn’t mean they run the place,” Chappelle explained. “You might go out in Hollywood and you might start connecting some kind of lines and you might adopt the delusion that Jews run show business. It’s not a crazy thing to think but it’s a crazy thing to say out loud.”

“It’s a big deal, he had broken the show business rules,” he added. “You know, the rules of perception. If they’re Black, then it’s a gang. If they’re Italian, it’s a mob. If they’re Jewish, it’s a coincidence and you should never speak about it.”

Addressing politics and the midterm elections, Chappelle said that the candidate that concerned him the most was Republican Herschel Walker, who is running to unseat incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA). The comedian said he didn’t “want to speak badly of” Walker “because he’s black, but I have to admit, he’s observably stupid.”

“Even when he’s not talking, his mouth will be open a little bit,” Chappelle continued, mocking Walker. “He’s the kind of guy who looks like he thinks before he makes a move on tic-tac-toe.”

He also took aim at former President Donald Trump and his legal woes over his handling of classified materials after leaving office.

After casting doubt on political pundits for recently claiming that the Trump era was ending following a string of losses in the midterm elections, Chappelle asked the crowd why Trump has “all them documents in his house? What is this?”

“This is a guy that’s famous for not reading his press briefings,” he continued, appearing to mistake the presidential daily brief for press briefings. “Now all of a sudden, he’s got 10,000 documents in his house.”

Chappelle then noted that he had been “fired from jobs many times” in his life, and had taken items from those workplaces on the way out.

“You know what I never stole from work?” he then asked. “Work.”
