MSNBC host Al Sharpton delivered a sharp warning directed at Donald Trump in response to reports that the president-elect is dealing with potential conflicts of interest.
“We’ll see what the president-elect says this week,” Sharpton said on his Sunday morning talk show, referring to Trump’s pledge on Twitter to hold a “major” news conference in New York City on Thursday to discuss how he will separate himself from his vast business empire while serving as commander in chief.
“But if he thought we’re going to overlook all this, well, there’s only one thing to say: Nice try, but we got you,” Sharpton added.
Ethics experts have openly questioned whether Trump can successfully part from his business ventures, even if he hands them over to his children, as he has said in the past.
Nearly six-in-10 Americans said in a recent CNN poll said that allowing his children to take over his business doesn’t go far enough to prevent conflicts of interest.
Adding to that concern was a report this week that Trump would hold onto his title of executive producer for “Celebrity Apprentice.”
Trump spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway suggested to CNN Friday that he will work on the NBC reality TV show in his spare time, while Trump himself tweeted that he will have “NOTHING” to do with the show “except for fact that I conceived it with Mark B & have a big stake in it. Will devote ZERO TIME!”
