Keep cool and stay on topic: Four things Biden needs to do during the debate to ensure victory

On Tuesday night, President Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will face off for the first time since the start of the general election. Networks expect record-shattering ratings, as tens of millions of voters will finally see the two candidates debate for the first time. Biden, who enjoys a steady lead over Trump according to most polls, arguably has the most to lose from a poor performance. Here are four things he needs to do:

1. Keep his cool

Despite selling himself as a calm centrist, the former vice president’s temper has historically been one of his greatest liabilities. During the primary, flashes of anger erupted from Biden when he was asked by the press about his children or his record on the Iraq War. Sources tell the Washington Examiner that the president intends to attack Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings repeatedly in an effort to paint Joe Biden as corrupt. Whether Biden keeps his cool could ultimately decide whether swing voters think he has the temperament to be president.

2. Stay on topic

Biden’s habit of drifting off and getting his thoughts jumbled is nothing new. In a debate setting, however, it could open an opportunity for Trump to attack him on his mental acuity. At times, Biden can begin a thought, only to forget his intended point. During a debate, voters generally want coherent policy-focused answers to questions. Generally, Biden has remained vague on his domestic policy plans. He may not have the opportunity to dodge tonight.

3. Remember that Trump is unpopular

Trump is the underdog going into November. The polls show it, as does the Biden campaign’s confidence in holding few voter rallies in swing states. Biden’s campaign also has a cash advantage at this point. For Biden, the key for tonight is reminding any voters on the fence that voting for him is far better than the alternative. That means drawing any belligerent tangents out of Trump as much as possible.

4. Remember who you need to win over

Believe it or not, roughly 5-10% of the country’s voters remain undecided. Although unlikely, should all of them vote for Trump in November, Biden would probably lose. Democrats universally support Biden, as do large swaths of Bernie Sanders supporters. At this point, those undecided voters likely don’t identify as members of the Left if they’re still open to voting for the president. Biden should remember that he shouldn’t necessarily pitch himself as a progressive, but as someone who can unify the country and restore calm. Those remaining voters are likely picking based on personality instead of any bold new government program.
