A new Netflix documentary features the underdog campaign efforts of New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in last year’s Democratic primary, along with three other female candidates who came up short in their races.
Netflix on Monday released a trailer for “Knock Down the House,” portraying campaign efforts of Ocasio-Cortez, who beat then-Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary to represent a Bronx and Queens-based district. The film also stars Amy Vilela, who lost a Democratic congressional primary in Nevada’s 4th District; Paula Jean Swearengin, who unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Joe Manchin, W.Va., in the Democratic primary; and Cori Bush of Missouri, who came up short in her effort to defeat Rep. Lacy Clay in the Democratic primary.
“Before my primary, three women & I agreed to film our journey of trying to run for office without big money. Now, #KnockDownTheHouse hits Netflix & select theaters next week, May 1st,” Ocasio-Cortez said when she tweeted the trailer.
“I’m running because everyday Americans deserve to be represented by everyday Americans,” Ocasio-Cortez says in the trailer. “Americans aren’t asking for a lot. They’re just asking for politicians to help them get by.”
Vilela tweeted about the documentary, “‘For one of us to make it through, a hundred of us have to try.'” This is only the beginning.”
