Take 5 for Feb. 3 to 5

ReelAbilities Disabilities Film Festival, through Feb. 9 The ReelAbilities Disabilities Film Festival, which was established in New York four years ago, is now hitting the road. A traveling version of the festival is visiting select cities, including the D.C. area through Feb. 9.

ReelAbilities highlights and focuses on the stories and lives of people with varying types of disabilities.

“I’ve known about ReelAbilities for several years,” said Susan Barocas, director of the Washington Jewish Film Festival and responsible for bringing the ReelAbilities festival to the area.

“ReelAbilities is really bringing to us stories we don’t always see on the screen,” Barocas added.

Nine different films, ranging from documentaries to features to shorts, will screen at Artisphere, the Avalon Theatre, Cinema Arts Theatre, the JCC of Greater Washington, the JCC of Northern Virginia and the Washington DC JCC.

In addition to the nine films, the festival features a number of speakers and special guests, and discussions will take place following the screenings, all part of the festival’s mission of telling stories and bringing awareness.

“These films break down the stereotypes and tell real stories about real people,” Barocas said.
