Melania Trump praises healthcare workers who ‘tirelessly’ help ‘keep our country healthy & safe’

First lady Melania Trump praised those in the healthcare industry who are “tirelessly” working to keep Americans healthy during the coronavirus outbreak.

“I want to take a moment to thank the medical staff, doctors, nurses & first responders who are working tirelessly to help keep our country healthy & safe,” she tweeted Monday.

Her message came after the White House announced its annual Easter Egg Roll was canceled “out of an abundance of caution” as the illness continues to spread. The tradition dates back to 1878 and was slated for April 13, but “the health and safety of all Americans must be the first priority, especially right now,” the first lady said.

“I deeply regret this cancellation, but we need to make difficult decisions in the short-term to ensure a healthy country for the long-term. During this time, I encourage everyone to listen to state and local officials, and follow CDC guidelines in order to help protect the health and well-being of everyone,” she added.

President Trump declared a national emergency last week, which freed up funds and resources to mitigate the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

“To unleash the full power of the federal government, I’m officially declaring a national emergency — two very big words,” he said during a news conference in the White House Rose Garden.
