The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore said this morning that is has canceled its annual Zoomerang! gala, citing the high cost of the event in a weakened economy.

“Zoomerang! has been a tremendous amount of fun for the Zoo and our supporters over the past 25 years,” said Don Hutchinson, the zoo’s interim president and CEO. “However, it is a very expensive event to stage and we felt that, in this economy, it was time to give Zoomerang! a rest after many wonderful years.”

Zoomerang! began 25 years ago, but has seen a slight decline in sponsorships and ticket sales in the last few years.

The zoo said its board of trustees and institutional advancement staff will consider staging a gala event in the future. Hutchinson said the Zoo will seek a more cost-effective format which can be managed more efficiently and generate revenue.
