Biden vows to support New York after subway attack

President Joe Biden pledged not to let up on federal support to New York until the shooter behind the subway attack gets apprehended.

“Jill and I are praying for those that are injured and all those touched by that trauma,” he said Tuesday of the first lady in Iowa. “We’re grateful for all the first responders who jumped into action, including civilians, civilians, who didn’t hesitate to help their fellow passengers.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki did not confirm a phone call between Biden and New York City Mayor Eric Adams. She repeated that the investigation is being led by New York authorities in tandem with federal counterparts, such as the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

“White House senior staff are in touch with Mayor Adams, with the police commissioner,” she told reporters aboard Air Force One. “I just spoke again with the president about this earlier on the plane, and he reiterated that that is his request of his team: Anything they need, anything they want, we are here to help them and provide that to them.”

At least 28 people were injured, 10 of them shot, by an at-large gunman who opened fire in a New York City subway during Tuesday morning’s rush hour commute. The attack is not being investigated as terrorism, according to the city’s Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell.
