The Sunshine State’s incoming governor is courting Michelle Rhee for Florida’s top education post, a Sunshine State blog reports.
Current commissioner Eric Smith says he will not resign, Governor-elect Rick Scott would need the State Board of Education’s approval to make the switch. But Scott already has hired one transition team member, with two positions up for appointment in December.
And finagling is, of course, not unprecedented: Jeb Bush’s commissioner, John Winn, moved aside for Charlie Crist.
Tampabay.com reports that Rhee has “quite a following in the Sunshine State, where many folks seem to like her brash style and bold ideas.”
Scott also is looking at Hillsborough, Fla., schools superintendent MaryEllen Elia.
