Rain possible through Thursday; weekend likely warm and sunny

Warm, sunny weather is coming to the D.C. area for Memorial Day weekend, forecasters predict. But first, residents and tourists will have to make it through a rainy week.

The National Weather Service is predicting showers for today, with thunderstorms possible after noon. The D.C. area could receive between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rainfall, with even more rain possible if there are thunderstorms.

Overnight, forcasters say there’s a 60 percent chance of precipition, with rain likely and a thunderstorm possible before 2 a.m. The area could receive more than a quarter of an inch of rainfall with thunderstorms.

Much of the rest of the week may also be rain-filled, according to the Weather Service. There’s a possibility of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as well, although there’s only a 50-percent chance of showers Tuesday and Wednesday and a 40-percent chance of rain on Thursday.

The high temperature for today will be about 75 degrees, and peak temperatures Tuesday through Thursday are predicted to be close to 80 degrees, forecasters said.

But the sun is likely to come out and the temperatures are likely to heat up just in time for the long weekend. Forecasters are predicting Friday to be partly sunny with a high temperature of about 84 degrees, and Saturday and Sunday to be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 80s in the District.
