An official at Badlands National Park took a sick buffalo calf from the park into his home, where it later died, a federal watchdog report indicated Wednesday.
The Department of Interior Office of the Inspector General released a report on a May 2010 incident in which a supervisory natural resource specialist at the park took a sickly calf from the park. The specialist received authorization from the deputy superintendent of Badlands to bring the buffalo calf into his home, where it later died.
The report called that a violation of National Park Service policy and federal and state laws.
“The local police chief chose not to cite the supervisory natural resource specialist for the misdemeanor violation and the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined prosecution,” the report said.
Badlands National Park is in South Dakota and is notable for its grasslands and distinct geologic formations.
