AFL-CIO slams tax reform as ‘con game’

The AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation, criticized the Republicans’ proposed tax reform package Wednesday, calling the proposal a “con game” aimed at working people.

“Here we go again. First comes the promise that tax giveaways for the wealthy and big corporations will trickle down to the rest of us. Then comes the promise that tax cuts will pay for themselves. Then comes the promise that they want to stop offshoring. And finally, we find out none of these things is true,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said in a press release. He asserted that the plan would lead to cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, education, and infrastructure.

The GOP’s proposed tax plan would cut the top corporate rate from more than 39 percent to 20, among other changes. Republicans argue the current rates, the highest in the developed world, are too high compared to other developed nations and have left U.S. companies at a disadvantage.
