FotoWeek D.C., through Saturday If FotoWeek D.C. is any indication, Washington is one heck of a photo city.
“I think Washington is a great photography city,” said FotoWeek D.C. founder and President Theo Adamstein. “The community here has always been strong.”
FotoWeek D.C. began in 2008 as a fall photography festival, and has now grown into a year-around organization called FotoDC celebrating local photography and photographers.
FotoWeek D.C. features exhibitions, lectures and more throughout the District. This year, the event has a central location in the old Borders location at 18th and L streets NW. Adamstein said that attendance has doubled from last year.
Adamstein started FotoWeek D.C. to give the city its proper due as a vibrant, transient city with multiple photographic influences.
“Washington photography hadn’t been recognized,” Adamstein said. He added there’s not one specific style in Washington. “We are an international city. We’re a crossroads.”
Photography has grown in popularity, much becaue of convenience and accessibility to photo-taking devices.
“It’s probably the healthiest,” Adamstein said of the art form.
