Friday: Fairgrounds Opening
Another sign that spring is here, in addition to the Cherry Blossom Festival, the optimism surrounding the Nationals and tourist sightings?
The Fairgrounds is opening.
“It’s coming quick,” said Fairgrounds co-owner Jason York. “There’s lots of things to do.”
Located within a long toss of Nationals Park, the Fairgrounds is the place to be before or after a baseball game. Fans can pregame with live music, games, food and drink. New this year is an additional bar, a nursery and a convenience store where fans can pick up some sunblock or whatever else they might need at the game.
York added that the space has been redesigned to make it more usable.
This is the second year of the Fairgrounds as currently presented but the fifth year that York and crew have been involved in creating a festive atmosphere outside the ballpark. Fans might remember the popular Bullpen, the precursor to the Fairgrounds.
The idea behind the Fairgrounds, and before that the Bullpen, was to offer something fun to do and somewhere to get some food and drink in the neighborhood surrounding the ballpark.
“We are baseball fans,” York said. “There’s a lack of things to do in the neighborhood. It was a great opportunity for us.”
The Fairgrounds open at 11 a.m. Friday before the Nationals’ exhibition against the New York Yankees.
