Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey disclosed she has lung cancer.
The Republican governor, 74, said Thursday that her doctor recently discovered a spot on her lungs, and tests determined it was a “tiny, isolated malignancy.”
“Within the past few weeks, during a routine exam, my longtime family physician discovered a spot on my lung that was unusual. Additional tests confirmed that this was indeed a tiny, isolated malignancy,” Ivey said in a statement.
“The good news is I am one of the fortunate ones where this was discovered early, and it is very treatable,” she said.
The governor said her doctors have assured her the treatment has a high rate of success and will minimally impact her schedule. She will begin outpatient treatment Friday at UAB Hospital.
“None of this will prevent me from continuing to serve as your governor and doing the work you elected me to do,” she said.
