University of Michigan president fired over ‘inappropriate relationship’ with employee

The University of Michigan’s president was fired for having an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate.

University President Mark Schlissel’s employment was terminated on Saturday after a special meeting with the University’s Board of Regents regarding an anonymous complaint filed to the board.

The relationship violated university policy and occurred “in a manner inconsistent with the dignity and reputation of the university,” the board announced in a press statement.

Schlissel is married and has four children, according to his university bio.

The board was informed via anonymous complaint that “Dr. Schlissel may have been involved in an inappropriate relationship with a University employee.” This was later confirmed through an investigation, which found that Schlissel had emailed said employee several times in an “inappropriate tone and inappropriate language,” the board claims.

The board listed several examples of Schlissel’s email exchanges in its termination letter to him. In a Nov. 4 exchange, Schlissel emailed the employee about a college basketball game that he was obligated to attend. Schlissel said he was disappointed about not sitting next to the employee and alleged that “the only reason I agreed to go was to go with you. there is a conspiracy against me.”

In a Dec. 3 email, he told the employee that they could give him a “private briefing” after discussing the Big Ten Championship “President’s Suite briefing Info.”

Schlissel’s termination was a year earlier than his previous retirement plans, reported the New York Times. The university president announced in October that he would resign in June 2023, when he would step down but continue to work as an adviser and president emeritus for the University of Michigan. That contract has been terminated.

The board named former University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman as interim president in Schlissel’s stead.
