President George H.W. Bush last week wished President-elect Trump luck at his Friday inauguration, but explained he cannot attend because he might die if he sits outside in the cold for the event.
Bush, who entered the hospital on Saturday due to shortness of breath, wrote a letter to Trump apologizing for his absence.
“Barbara and I are so sorry we can’t be there for your inauguration on Jan. 20,” Bush wrote. “My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under. Same for Barbara. So I guess we’re stuck in Texas.”

“But we will be with you and the country in spirit,” he wrote. “I want you to know that I wish you the very best as you begin this incredible journey of leading our great country. If I can ever be of help please let me know.”
All the other living presidents — Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama — are expected to be in attendance at Trump’s inauguration on Friday.
A statement from Bush’s office Wednesday showed he’s recovering in an intensive care unit and in stable condition.
“He was admitted to the ICU at Houston Methodist Hospital to address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia,” the statement read. “Doctors performed a procedure to protect and clear his airway that required sedation. President Bush is stable and resting comfortably in the ICU, where he will remain for observation.”
The statement added his wife is also hospitalized.
“Additionally, Mrs. Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital this morning as a precaution after experiencing fatigue and coughing,” the statement read.
