South Korean President Moon Jae-in discussed the need for a “complete” overhaul of his country’s armed forces as North Korea makes progress with its missile weapons capabilities.
“I believe we might need a complete defense reform at the level of a rebirth instead of making some improvements or modifications,” Moon said Wednesday local time, while meeting with military leaders, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.
On Tuesday it was reported that a U.S. intelligence assessment found that North Korea has successfully produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit inside its intercontinental ballistic missiles, which the country has been testing in recent months.
Later in the day, President Trump escalated his rhetoric on the issue, threatening “fire and fury” against the hermit nation if it doesn’t stop its nuclear weapons program.
North Korean state media then broadcast North Korea’s military singling out Guam as a potential missile target as retaliation for U.S. provocations.
Over the weekend Moon requested an urgent call with Trump, and the two discussed North Korean aggression and a new round of international sanctions aimed at stopping it.
