Power back on at Turkish air base U.S. uses for ISIS ops

One week after a failed military coup in Turkey, commercial power has been restored to the Incirlik air base, where U.S warplanes are supporting the war against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

U.S. European Command said electric power was restored Friday, after a week in which a backup generator was used to power critical base operations.

“We will retain this capability should the power be interrupted again,” the EUCOM statement said. “Meanwhile, there is a steady flow of hot food, water and fuel to support our service members and civilians in Turkey.”

The outside power was cut July 16 when the government of Turkey began to move against the accused coup-plotters, including the Turkish commander of the base.

“The United States, in close coordination with the Turkish military, will continue to work towards ensuring our facility, the U.S. servicemembers who live and work on it and the operations occurring there remain fully prepared to take on a myriad of missions as we work together to defeat terrorism,” the statement concluded.
