A woman and a boy were killed and three others injured in a shooting in southwest Miami-Dade County early Monday morning, after which the suspect committed suicide.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired at a residence located near the Homestead Air Reserve Base at around 1:40 a.m., where they found five people shot, police said. Two victims, a 38-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, were pronounced dead at the scene.
First responders airlifted two of the surviving victims, an 11-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, to a local hospital, according to a police department news release. One of the minors was in critical condition, while the other was stable at the time of transport.

The fifth victim, an 18-year-old man, was also transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Police said that the 42-year-old suspect, who is the deceased woman’s boyfriend, was located by officers at a nearby location within the residential community where the shooting occurred and where he took his life during an encounter with the department’s team of hostage negotiators.

“As officers were attempting to negotiate with the subject, he committed suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Miami-Dade Public Information Officer Angel Rodriguez told reporters.
Rodriguez added that investigators have not yet been able to determine familial ties of the victims.
“Right now, our homicide detectives have a very difficult task ahead of them,” he said. “This is an investigation that’s going to take time. Whenever we have juveniles that not only are injured but killed, it affects us all as a community.”
The Monday shooting comes after a number of other fatal shootings in Miami-Dade County in recent days. A female corrections officer was shot and killed and five others were injured early Sunday morning following a graduation party, and at least two people were killed and 20 others injured in a shooting outside a banquet hall on May 30.

“We all have to band together. This violence has to stop,” Police Department Director Freddy Ramirez said following the Sunday shooting. “And this is extremely frustrating. Every weekend is the same thing.”
