In criticizing Clinton, Pence leaves out his own reversal on TPP

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence contradicted his former view on the Trans-Pacific Partnership when he tried to defend Donald Trump’s position on Tuesday.

Trump often rails against TPP, President Obama’s proposed trade deal with Asia, and Pence said he shares Trump’s view. But that wasn’t always the case.

“I wholly agree with Donald Trump’s view about TPP,” Pence told CNN on Tuesday. “Hillary Clinton did say that she thought the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal was the gold standard of trade deals. Now she’s changed her view of that.”

Pence did not include the fact that he explicitly supported TPP, too.

“Trade means jobs, but trade also means security,” Pence tweeted in September 2014. “The time has come for all of us to urge the swift adoption of the Trans Pacific Partnership.”

Pence’s varying positions on trade may become an issue at next week’s vice presidential debate in Virginia.
