Donated SmarTrips benefit needy students

Fed up with the heat, mosquitos, scandals, taxation without representation, and incessant metaphors about the debt ceiling?

Well, whatever reason you have for moving out of the Washington area, do some good before you hit the road by donating your SmarTrip card to underprivileged students.

The Asian-American LEAD is collecting the Metro cards to benefit youth in Montgomery County and the District. Both school systems have large populations of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, the districts’ measure of poverty. And things like field trips and volunteer opportunities require some money to get from A to B.

“Help us reduce travel costs in order to invest more into our students’ lives and spend less on Metro expenses,” Edison Park, the Maryland middle school program coordinator, wrote on AALEAD’s website.

To send the organization your SmatTrip card, email Park at [email protected] or call 301-942-9333.

And yes, they’re open to straight-up donations.
