President Trump is his own worst enemy, according to liberal billionaire George Soros.
Soros told the Independent he has rooted for Trump’s downfall, and the president is succeeding in granting him his wish.
“I have put my faith in Trump to destroy himself, and he has exceeded my wildest expectations,” Soros said in the interview published Monday.
In response to the interviewer’s remark about Trump not representing the “values of an open and free society,” Soros said it’s a “weakness that I hope will not last very long.”
“Donald Trump would like to be a dictator. But he cannot be one because there is a constitution in the United States that people still respect. And it will prevent him from doing certain things. That does not mean that he will not try, because he is literally fighting for his life,” he said.
Critics say the Trump administration was too slow in responding to the coronavirus outbreak, leading to a lack of sufficient testing and personal protective equipment. Unemployment has also hit a record high amid the pandemic.
Soros warned in January that the economy could be headed for disaster ahead of the 2020 election, though he linked the potential calamity to Trump’s economic policies, not the looming pandemic.
“The stock market, already celebrating Trump’s military success, is breaking out to reach new heights,” he said at an informal dinner at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, according to CNBC. “But an overheated economy can’t be kept boiling for too long. If all this had happened closer to the elections, it would have assured his reelection.”
