For the first decade that the world knew of the Psychedelic Furs, the band was extremely busy. Creating seven albums in 11 years, featuring such iconic ’80s songs as “Pretty In Pink,” “Love My Way” and “The Ghost in You” while supporting that output with touring, can take its toll.
So, the band did the exact opposite in the ’90s. The Psychedelic Furs went on hiatus, re-forming in 2000. In the last 12 years, the group has toured occasionally, on its own time.
“It’s our own pace,” said Psychedelic Furs bassist Tim Butler, who along with his brother and lead singer Richard formed the band in England in 1977. “There’s no pressure. Now we’re just doing it and having fun.”

The Psychedelic Furs are about to embark on a three-week tour, including stops at the State Theatre in Falls Church on Saturday and Rams Head in Annapolis on Monday and Tuesday.
Shorter tours a few weeks at a time are more in line with the band’s current approach. While the upcoming jaunt stays east of the Mississippi, there might be more shows elsewhere later in the year.
One thing that Butler has found recently is that crowds coming out to see the Furs range in age, including younger fans who have recently discovered the band’s music.
“The music sort of transcends time,” Butler said from his home in Kentucky, crediting the production on the band’s early albums such as its self-titled debut, “Talk Talk Talk,” “Forever Now” and “Mirror Moves.” “It’s not stuck in the period that it was recorded. Our first four records could come out now and still sound just as powerful.”
Butler said there may be some new music down the road, and that his brother has started writing. One thing that keeps the band from releasing new stuff comes with trying to match the bar they set in the 1980s.
“We have such a great back catalog to live up to,” Butler said with a hint of pride. “It’s an intimidating prospect. We’re doing it slowly.”
