OAKLAND, Md. (AP) — State Comptroller Peter Franchot is bringing his campaign for post-Labor Day school openings to western Maryland.
Franchot (fran-CHOH’) joins Garrett County elected, business and tourism officials at Deep Creek Lake Thursday to promote the campaign he calls, “Let Summer Be Summer.”
Franchot aims to collect 10,000 signatures on a petition to push back the start of the Maryland public school year.
A governor’s task force endorsed the concept in May.
Franchot says delaying the start of the school year would result in an additional $74.3 million in direct economic activity, largely due to increased spending in vacation destinations.
