Eric Adams asks why any 17-year-old would be carrying a gun

New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams wondered what any teenager is doing with a gun, whether it’s in Kenosha or Manhattan.

Adams, a former New York City Police Department captain, appeared Wednesday on The View. He was asked about his take on the Kyle Rittenhouse acquittal.

“We have the extremes really attempting to take away our way of life in America,” Adams said. “The extremes are far, far right and far, far left.”

Rittenhouse was a “17-year-old who had a gun that he could not legally buy, but he was able to carry,” Adams said, adding that he shot people whom “he went into that community to focus on.”

Rittenhouse in August 2020 shot and killed two rioters and wounded another amid protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

He was found not guilty on all charges Friday.

“We also had a 17-year-old here in this city who shot a 22-year-old, promising young man,” Adams continued. “What are 17-year-olds doing with guns in this country?”

The potential loosening of gun laws in New York by the Supreme Court is “frightening,” he said.

If the ruling passes, Adams mentioned working with the NYPD to establish “barriers” to making the permitting of firearms too loose since that is the department that issues licenses.

“We must adjust once the rule comes out,” he said.
