President Trump joked about his ambitions for a second term on Thursday at an event honoring the Wounded Warrior Project, vowing to host the traditional veterans gathering “for about seven more years.”
“President Bush hosted the first soldier ride at the White House in 2008 and I am proud to continue this incredible tradition,” Trump said at the outset of the event, which was moved inside the White House due to rain in Washington on Thursday morning. “We’re going to keep it going for a long time. I should have it for about seven more years.”
Trump has made veterans issues a focal point of his campaign and early presidency. Earlier Thursday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer previewed some of the administration’s plans for reforming the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“Our way of life continues because of men and women who are willing to sacrifice anything and everything to protect their fellow warriors and to protect all of us,” Trump said at the Wounded Warrior Project event.
First lady Melania Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were also in attendance.
